Wave Motion Apparatus 24 Pulley demonstrates longitudinal and transverse wave motion. It consists of several eccentric plastic discs that support a series of plastic rods connected to a handle. When the handle is turned, wave simulations can be observed on the rods.
The wave motion apparatus demonstration model illustrates the fundamentals of longitudinal and transverse wave motions. Made from high-quality plastic, it features a number of eccentric discs supporting a series of rods that rotate around a handle.
As the handle rotates, it causes a series of cams to turn, which in turn make a set of 24 vertical rods rise and fall. Their motion mimics that of a sine wave, as the vertical movement results from circular rotary motion. Transverse motion can be seen by observing the tips of the rods, similar to ripples in a water tank or a vibrating guitar string. A scale positioned behind the handle divides the rotary motion into degrees of rotational angle, allowing for the study of the relationship, or ‘phase’, between the rotary and vertical motions.
